The Making Of Melvin

"Melvin" is an independent short film that was produced by Ryan Road Films and Crooked Pine Productions. "Melvin" is the second film that the two companies have partnered in producing, the first being “The Station”, an independent feature film that was produced in 2012. The script for "Melvin" is based on a  story by David Shattuck and Producer Christopher Enrique Carantit.

Pre-production on "Melvin" began in late summer of 2013. Toward the end of August, the crew for "Melvin" was in place; it consisted of independent filmmakers along with a few students from Springfield Technical Community College. The first person to join the crew was the Director of Photography, Jon Martinez. Jon has been a Director of Photography on numerous short films and music videos. He is also a great friend of the director, Tyler Geis.

Auditions were held in Northampton, MA on September 7th; by the end of that month, the film was fully cast. Day one of Principal Photography began October 20th on the campus of Springfield Technical Community College. The bust stop scenes in the film were shot at the college.

The next scene to be shot on the first day was the interrogation room scene. The crew was able to create a perfect interrogation room within the basement of a single family home in Florence.  Day one of principal photography was a complete success.

The second day of principal was a week later. It was the soccer game scene and that was shot in Ashfield, MA on the old Sanderson Academy fields. This was by far the biggest scene in the movie with the addition of fifteen extras.

The last day of principal photography was November 10th, and that location was an apartment building in Greenfield, MA. Shooting that day took place in and around the apartment.

The film is currently in post production and is being edited in Middletown, CT by Hollie Kinney, a local editor. It is slated for a February 14th, Valentine’s Day, release date. The score for the film was recorded in Hawley, MA by creator David Shattuck.
